Hope everyone out there reading this had a terrific long weekend! I just got back Monday afternoon after a 7.5 hr trip back from Oklahoma. It can be hard trying to transition back to work after a long day of travel. Take it from me, it was the longest trip it seemed like. We had a lot of road construction to get through. Saw some interesting things from an officer having a guy stopped at gun point on the outer road of the interstate to a coach travel bus being on fire. You just never know what will happen when your traveling.
As the kids have gotten older long travels seem to really make them restless! As I've mentioned before my son has ADHD so this makes things even more difficult when you have a kid bouncing off the walls and talking non-stop. ( Enter sarcastic laugh and hand slap to the forehead...) Some things to keep in mind when doing long travels is to have fun with it. Play car games to try and pass the time.

Keeping snacks on hand is a must if you don't want to be making stops at every gas station along the way. We had snacks and drinks and only stopped for gas along the way. This was a prime time for everyone to get out and stretch their legs. Not to mention take bathroom breaks, I am one of those travelers that you are to be prepared for long trips and minimal stops, the more you stop the longer the trip will be and that isn't good for anyone.
I played music of course as I can't just ride in silence. The kids didn't appreciate karaoke hour and were quite annoyed with me. I myself felt it was a fabulous concert and it was free. On our way home we did make a pitstop at a gift shop and candy shop so that way they could get out, walk around and buy something they wanted. This kept them quiet for a bit, but the restlessness finally kicked in when we were stuck in road construction traffic for an hour. This would make anyone restless, I thought about just getting out and walking to see how far I could get before traffic finally moved. It was raining off and on and I would look like a lunatic out there along the interstate.
Once we finally made it home it was everyone's job to help unload the car. It makes things go much faster when everyone chips in and grabs a bag. We had the car unpacked, bags emptied and laundry started within 15 min. I would say that was a record time for us as a family of four. Although it was a short trip to Oklahoma and we miss our friends dearly it was great to sleep in our own bed. You find a new appreciation when you complain about it on the daily and then when you are away for a few days it just feels so darn good to lay in your bed! Some day we will be upgrading our mattress, till that happens I'll complain and then appreciate it when I'm not in it.
